It took several months for the diplomatic crisis between Germany and Morocco, born among other things of the German position on the Moroccan Sahara issue, to find an official way out that suits both parties.

The heads of diplomacy of the two countries, in a joint declaration, published after a meeting by videoconference held on Wednesday February 16, agreed « to reconnect with the particular quality of bilateral relations in all areas, in the spirit of proven policies, consistency and mutual respect.

Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his German counterpart, Annalena Baerbock, welcomed the exchange of correspondence between King Mohammed VI and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, which clearly demonstrates the mutual interest in establishing a new Moroccan-German partnership.

The statement said the two also « agreed to engage in a new dialogue to overcome misunderstandings that had arisen in their relationship and to deepen a multifaceted bilateral relationship. »

The resumption of relations between the two countries goes with « the resumption of cooperation in all areas and with all actors ». It is also marked by the return of their ambassadors. The Moroccan ambassador, Ms. Zhor Alaoui, returned to her post in the German capital at the end of January 2022. Berlin has promised, for its part, the arrival of a new German ambassador to Rabat, after eight months of vacancy.

It should be recalled that among the reasons which had led Rabat to freeze its relations with Berlin, is the attitude adopted by Germany after the decision of former American President Donald Trump to recognize Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara, in December 2020. This European country went so far as to convene an emergency meeting at the UN Security Council to discuss this issue.
