The end of restrictions in the fight against Covid-19 has sounded in South Africa where President Cyril Ramaphosa announced, Monday in a televised address to the nation, the lifting of all legal restrictions in connection with the pandemic. of Covid-19, for the need to revive the economy.
From this Tuesday, April 5, life is supposed to return to normal in the country. The Head of State also justified the lifting of restrictions by the significant drop in new infections and deaths due to the virus. Mortality would have gone from the average of 420 deaths per day, last July, to 12 daily deaths last week.
“Although the pandemic is not over, and although we remain cautious, we can be sure that we are now in a better position than we have been at any other time in the past 750 days” , Ramaphosa said.
« We hope that the worst is behind us, and that better days await us, » he also said, adding that « now is the time to grow our economy and create jobs (…) , to put our country back on track. Now is the time to heal, recover and rebuild.”
However, the authorities do not want to lose sight of vigilance. Some “transitional” measures will still remain in effect for the next 30 days; the case of wearing a mask in covered public spaces.
The country most affected in Africa by the pandemic, South Africa has paid a very heavy price economically, among other things. Alongside numerous job losses, unemployment soared to 35.3% of the labor force in the last quarter of 2021.
