Algeria and Russia sign a “new document” serving as a basis for strengthening their relations

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, on an official visit to Algiers on May 9 and 10, said on Tuesday that his country and Algeria maintain « sincere and friendly relations » and have both decided to strengthen their cooperation, through the signing of « a new document » to serve as the basis for bilateral relations.

He spoke thus after a head-to-head with his Algerian counterpart and an audience granted by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Presumably, the « new document » should replace another that was signed in 2001 by both parties. The cooperation deemed satisfactory is not limited to the diplomatic level. It also affects other areas (economy, mining, security, health, etc.).

According to Sergei Lavrov, Russian companies are interested in developing their relations with Algerian partners in these different sectors.

The Russian minister sent an official invitation from President Vladimir Putin to his Algerian counterpart for an official visit to Moscow. « In order to develop political relations and to strengthen commercial, economic, military, artistic, cultural and humanitarian cooperation, we have transmitted to President Tebboune the invitation of his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to pay a visit to Moscow,” he said.

While Russia regularly faces sanctions from Western countries following the invasion of Ukraine, Algeria does not hide its support for its Russian partner. In early April, Algiers voted against the decision of the UN General Assembly to suspend Russia from the Human Rights Council.

Russia and Algeria are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations this year. The event coincides with the 60th anniversary of Algeria’s independence.
