The National Council of the Transition (CNT) in Guinea, which acts as a legislative body, approved, Wednesday, May 11, a duration of 36 years for the current transition in the country, three months less than the deadline. advocated by the president of the transition, colonel MamadyDoumbouya, at the end of last April.
Speaking at the end of a plenary session, the rapporteur of the law commission, Jean Pierre Kotebendouno indicated that « the national councillors, through an ad hoc committee, have decided to revise downwards, going from 39 to 36 months the duration of the transition”.
If the overwhelming majority of councilors opted for this timetable, deemed sufficient for a return to constitutional order, the main political parties united within the G58 boycotted the vote, considering that the CNT has neither the prerogatives nor the legitimacy of determining the duration of the transition.
« The role of the CNT is clear, it is to legislate instead of a national assembly », according to Joachim Millimono, the communication officer of the UFDG, signatory of the G58.
The opposition advocates an inclusive dialogue between the military junta united in the National Rally Committee for Development (CNRD) and the living forces of the country.
“The choice of duration is up to, under the terms of article 77 of the charter, the CNRD and the living forces of the nation, which are none other than political actors and civil society,” insisted Millimono.
As if verbal reactions were not enough, the National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (FNDC) plans to organize demonstrations to show its opposition to this situation where the CNT is acting beyond its powers.
Never mind, government spokesman Ousmane Gaoul Diallo said that the resolution adopted by the CNT will take effect from the promulgation of the law.
Will the new timetable meet the expectations of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which has always campaigned for a “very short” transition? The sub-regional organization will certainly decide on this subject.
