The former Somali head of state, Hassan Cheikh Mohamoud, who reigned over the country between 2012 and 2017, was again elected president this Sunday, May 15.

Nearly forty candidates were in the running in the first round of the ballot held by indirect suffrage and four contenders in the second round. The two finalists who faced each other in the last phase of the election are the incumbent president, Mohamed Abdoullahi Mohamed, and Hassan Cheikh Mohamoud.

« Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud is the winner of the election for the presidency of the Federal Republic of Somalia, » said Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nour.

Ironically, the two men also faced each other in 2017 and it was Mohamed Abdoullahi Mohamed, known as Farmajo, who won the battle.

After the inauguration of Sheikh Mohamoud, the two men made statements. “It is truly remarkable that the president is here by my side, we must go forward and never go back, we must heal our wounds”, suggested the president-elect.

« I salute my brother here, the new president Hassan Cheikh Mohamoud, and wish him good luck in the enormous task that awaits him, » said his predecessor.
This election should take place since February 2021, at the end of Farmajo’s first term. Since then, the international community has multiplied calls for the holding of the election, sometimes uttering threats. It is now done.
