The Chadian authorities declared a state of food and nutritional emergency on Thursday, June 2, in the face of the deterioration of the food situation that the country has been experiencing for several months.
N’Djamena only confirms the warnings that were already given by UN agencies on the trap of famine. The presidential decree announcing the measure, mentions a « growing risk that the populations run if no humanitarian assistance including food aid and other activities for recovery and strengthening of livelihoods and nutrition is provided ».
The country is seeking both national and international intervention. « All national actors and international partners » are invited « to come to the aid of the populations identified in the ‘crisis phase’ and those in the ’emergency phase’ through emergency humanitarian assistance », indicates the same source.
If the UN has been raising alarm about the food situation in this Central African country since last year, it must be recognized that the war in Ukraine has further aggravated this situation. Russia and Ukraine, which are in conflict, alone provide 30% of world wheat exports.
The crisis is making it difficult for these two countries to export and the shortage of cereals is causing a continuous rise in prices, to the point of causing discontent among the populations on the African continent.
The President-in-Office of the African Union, Macky Sall, spoke this Friday with the Russian Head of State, Vladimir Putin, in Sochi, about the release of cereals in order to supply Africa or the world. in general.
He told the press, after their interview, that he is “reassured”. « We leave here very reassured and very happy with our exchanges, » he said. It remains to feel the practical consequences of this trip to Russia.
