The seventy-second session of the Regional Committee of the World Health Organization for Africa (RC72) opened on Monday in Lomé, the Togolese capital.
Several topics will be discussed, including those related to communicable diseases, infectious diseases, health security, universal health coverage, the fight against neglected tropical diseases, the management of health services.
The meeting recorded the presence of the Ministers of Health of the 47 countries that make up WHO Africa, experts, as well as technical and financial partners. Some 400 delegates are expected in person and 300 others in virtual mode.
Togo had expressed its wish to host this major meeting in 2019. “The unanimous choice of Togo is closely linked to the leadership of Head of State Faure Gnassingbé. For the rest of us, it is the testimony of a certain number of activities or successes of our country”, indicated the Togolese Minister of Communication and Media, Akodah Ayewouadan, on August 17th.
He spoke thus during a press conference, accompanied by the Minister of Health, Moustapha Mijiyawa, and the resident representative of the WHO in Togo, Binta Fatoumata Tidiane Diallo who declared that « this week will be a celebration of health, but also a space dedicated to a conglomeration of reflections on the issues related to health on the continent and which are part of the agenda of the WHO ».
The RC72 will end on August 26th. Note that the 2020 and 2021 RCs were held in virtual mode due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
