President Évariste Ndayishimiye replaced Prime Minister Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni, his former companion in the maquis, on Wednesday after accusations of attempted putsch.

He passed through the National Assembly which, seized in an emergency, elected unanimously, by a vote by a show of hands, General Gervais Ndirakobuca as the new Prime Minister.

Ndirakobuca, until now Minister of the Interior, Public Security and Community Development, was the only candidate proposed by President Ndayishimiye.

The dismissal of General Alain Guillaume Bunyoni, one of the most powerful men in the country, is not in itself a surprise. Indeed, Burundians expected, to a certain extent, strong actions from the Head of State who denounced, a few days ago, the schemes carried out by some of his relatives against him.

In a speech to the magistrates last weekend, he attacked those who would be motivated by coup ambitions, believing themselves to be “all-powerful”. “I can assure you, there will be no more coups in Burundi! There will be no more war, God is witness to that,” he said.

For several observers, the president’s speech was undoubtedly aimed at his Prime Minister Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni.
