Angolan President Joao Lourenço, 68, was sworn in on Thursday, September 15 in Luanda for a second term as head of the country, following the victory of his party, the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA). , in the legislative elections of 24th August last.

In his swearing-in speech, Lourenço pledged to be « the president of all Angolans », and promised, among other things, the fight against unemployment and salary increases.

The investiture ceremony recorded the presence of some 15,000 Angolans. About fifty Heads of State and Government made the trip.

Moroccan sovereign Mohammed VI, represented by head of government Aziz Akhannouch, sent the re-elected Angolan president a message of congratulations and wishes for success in his high office. The King expressed « his consideration of the ties of African friendship and brotherhood uniting the two countries, reiterating his constant determination to work together with the Angolan President to strengthen bilateral relations on the basis of mutual respect and cooperation fruitful, in the service of the interests of the two brotherly peoples ».

As a reminder, Angola does not hold presidential elections. It is up to the head of the list of the winning party in the legislative elections to settle in the presidential chair. The MPLA, a political party in power since the country’s independence, won the elections with 51.17% of the vote, its lowest score ever recorded.
