The Director of the National University Hospital Center (CNHU) of Cotonou, in Benin announced, Sunday, October 9, “4 deaths of patients recorded Friday in the early morning”, following “a malfunction in the intensive care unit”.
If this person in charge did not give any details on the circumstances of this incident, the local press evokes a power cut which would be at the origin of this situation. She also affirms that this incident would have been passed over in silence had it not been for the activism of the social networks which widely relayed and denounced the tragedy.
Some were indignant that the largest hospital in the country may lack an alternative device capable of taking over in the event of a major electricity problem.
The Minister of Health, who presented the government’s condolences to the bereaved families, described the situation as « serious ».
President Patrice Talon reportedly seized the Health Sector Regulatory Authority. For his part, the public prosecutor opened an investigation entrusted to the criminal brigade.
