Health authorities in the South West region of Cameroon announced on Monday, October 10, cases of monkeypox reported in the health districts of Mbonge and Kumba.

In a circular note addressed to the heads of all the health districts in the region, the regional delegate for public health in the region, Dr. Filbert Eko Eko, informs that “tests carried out in the laboratory of the Pasteur Center in Yaoundé (… ) on October 8, confirmed cases of monkey pox.”

He called on them to launch a health watch and prepare responses against the disease. But this official did not give details on the registered cases, in particular their number, gender…

The Ministry of Public Health recognizes that Cameroon is an “endemic” country for monkeypox. While the first cases had appeared in early July, in certain regions (South-West, Center and North-West), the authorities had set up a multi-sector coordination of the response, while strengthening surveillance for the rapid detection of cases. and their care.

Monkeypox is transmitted to humans through contact with people, animals or objects that carry the virus, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
