Congolese opponent Martin Fayulu has stepped up to the plate against Rwanda, which he says is « the cause of the misfortunes » of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), calling for the severance of diplomatic relations between the two countries, in an interview granted on Thursday to the French media RFI and France 24.
Several voices both nationally and internationally accuse Rwanda of supporting the M23 rebellion active in eastern DRC and which has taken two localities under its control in a few months.
For the leader of the ECIDE (Engagement for Citizenship and Development) party, the Rwandan Ambassador in Kinshasa should be dismissed, and that of the DRC in Kigali recalled, before « breaking diplomatic relations » with Rwanda.
He expressed his opposition to the project of deployment in his country of a military force from the countries of the East African Community (EAC) in the east of the DRC to fight the armed groups there, after denouncing the integration of the DRC within the EAC, an initiative of President Félix Tshisekedi.
The DRC “is not in East Africa, it is in Central Africa. It was Mr. Kagame who dragged Mr. Tshisekedi into this affair to get him more. To economically balkanize” the DRC, he explained.
In addition, Fayulu, who still claims to have won the last presidential election in 2019, said that “if Mr. Tshisekedi had refused the deal concocted by Kagame and Kabila, we would not be there. And if the Congo had respected the truth of the ballot box, today the country would be managed differently. We would not have had this atrocious war that Rwanda is imposing on us”.
It should be noted that Washington, through its representative to the UN, Robert Wood, called on Rwanda to stop its aid to the M23, during the meeting of the UN Security Council on the Great Lakes region, in New York.
On October 24, Kigali, which denies any support for this rebellion, accused the Congolese government of being « on the path of a continuous military escalation, contrary to the declarations of the president of the DRC according to which his country is focused on a diplomatic resolution of the conflict in eastern DRC”.
