The Republic of Guatemala has just extended the list of countries with a consulate general in Dakhla, by opening its diplomatic representation there this Thursday, December 1.
As for other countries, Guatemala has thus marked its firm support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and its territorial integrity.
The inauguration ceremony was chaired by the Guatemalan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mario Adolfo Búcaro, and the wali of the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region, governor of the province of Oued Eddahab, Lamine Benomar, in the presence of many elected officials and of consuls accredited to Dakhla.
Guatemala has implemented its decision to open a consulate in Dakhla, announced on September 22, following a meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Living Abroad, Nasser Bourita, and his Guatemalan counterpart, Mario Bucaro Flores.
“Guatemala has reiterated its clear position on the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, considering that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the solution to this dispute and announces the decision to open a consulate in the city of Dakhla to take advantage of its economic potential and its openness to the rest of the African continent,” said a joint press release after the tete-a-tete which took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
“For us, the concepts of sovereignty, peace and territorial integrity are very important. We support Morocco’s position on this issue and we will continue to support Morocco forever, » said the head of diplomacy of Guatemala, speaking to the press.
The Consulate General of Guatemala joins the 27 consulates open in the southern provinces, including 15 in Dakhla and 12 in Laayoune.
