The provincial councils of the ruling party in Gabon, the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), meeting in the various provinces of the country last weekend, showed respectively their desire to see their leader, President Ali Bongo, run for a new mandate in 2023.
This support only confirms the statements already made by the caciques of the CEO. Before the holding of the provincial councils, the secretary general of the CEO, Steeve Nzegho Dieko hinted that “in 2023, Ali Bongo Ondimba must be able to win the presidential election (…). It is by being united that we can do it”.
The president had himself also declared, on the occasion of the celebration of the 54th birthday of the CEO, on March 12, that “2023 is fast approaching. I will be there with you. For you. The only way out will be victory. A frank, clear, indisputable victory.
Believing to have « totally and definitively overcome » the « terrible ordeal » of his stroke, Bongo says he wants to complete the work he has started.
At the same time, the Gabonese opposition is organizing itself with a view to alternation, and this by highlighting the possibility of coalition. Opponent Paulette Missambo, of the National Union (UN), pleaded last week « for the gathering and unity of the forces of alternation » to « promote a civic and active dynamic, while laying down the foundations of modern governance ».
“I dream of an opposition advancing in close ranks before, during and after the 2023 deadlines (…) But we will have to be loyal to each other, even if it means demanding the adoption of rules known and accepted by all”, she also said.
