Niger: President Bazoum inaugurates a new 22 megawatt power plant in Zinder

The President of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum inaugurated, on Wednesday in Zinder (South), a new diesel power plant with a power of 22 megawatts, according to information relayed by the Nigerian Press Agency (ANP).

With a total cost of 14.4 billion FCFA, this plant should meet the demand of the Zinder region and partially help other regions, in particular Maradi and Tahoua.

Guaranteeing electricity in quantity and quality throughout the national territory is « one of the priorities of President Bazoum’s act 3 renaissance program », recalled the Minister of State for Energy and Renewable Energies, Ibrahim Yacoubou, during the inauguration ceremony, quoted by the ANP.

Yacoubou stressed that his ministry is fully « committed to the implementation of the National Strategy for Access to Electricity (SNAE) which aims to increase the current electrification rate from 20% to 80% on the Horizon 2035 with an intermediate objective of 40% in 2025”.

Other electricity units are under construction, still according to the Minister who cited, among others, the 30 MW solar power plant in Gorou Banda (Niamey) which will be inaugurated in early April 2023, the solar-diesel hybrid power plant in 25 MW in Agadez, which could be inaugurated before the end of 2023, or even the 20MW power plants in Maradi, 10MW hybrid in Diffa and 10MW in Dosso.

The new Zinder power plant was built by the Mauritanian company ISTITHMAR West Africa (IWA) with its Turkish partner WINENERJI under a BOOT (built own operate and transfer) Public-Private Partnership agreement concluded with Niger, according to the ANP.

Minister Yacoubou thanked this IWA company, which also welcomed the trust it received from the government of Niamey.

The inauguration ceremony took place in the presence of members of the government, national deputies, the Sultan of Damagaram, the Ambassador of Mauritania to Niger and other personalities.
