The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) has announced a figure of one hundred million people who have been forced from their homes in 2022; “A record that should never have existed”, according to the head of the agency, Filippo Grandi, reports a press release published Wednesday, December 28 on the information site of the UN.

The UN has continued to assist those in need in multiple ways and to push for more legal and safer ways for migrants to seek refuge outside their countries, the UN body says.

The 100 million includes people fleeing conflict, violence, human rights abuses and persecution. Thousands of desperate migrants headed mainly for Europe, entrusting their lives to human traffickers and undertaking perilous journeys across the Mediterranean, which all too often ended tragically, UNHCR said.

This figure is up from some 90 million in 2021. Outbreaks of violence and protracted conflicts, the statement continues, have been determining factors for migration in many parts of the world, including Ukraine, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso , Syria and Myanmar.
