Burkina ranked at the top of the countries most affected by terrorism in Africa in 2022 (GTI)

Burkina Faso is the first country in Africa and the second country in the world most affected by terrorism in 2022, with 310 terrorist incidents which caused 1,135 deaths and 496 injuries, according to the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2023 .

In 2021, this West African country had recorded 224 terrorist incidents. Regarding the number of deaths, it has increased by 50% compared to 2021.

Globally, Afghanistan ranks first. After Burkina come respectively Somalia, Mali and Syria. In all, five of the ten countries most affected by terrorism in the world are African. Nigeria and Niger occupy the eighth and tenth places.

Terrorist attacks worldwide decreased by 28% in 2022, from 5463 to 3955 in 2021. The total number of deaths due to terrorism fell from 7328 in 2021 to 6701 in 2022.

In 2022, terrorist attacks were mostly carried out by ISIS, Shebaab, the Support Group for Islam and Muslims and the Balochistan Liberation Front in western Pakistan.

More than half of the 1,135 terrorism deaths in 2022 were civilians, according to the GTI, a report published by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).
