From now on, Amazigh (Berber) New Year’s Day will be an official paid national holiday in Morocco, as decided by King Mohammed VI.
« His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist him, has decided to establish the Amazigh New Year’s Day, an official paid national holiday, like the first Moharram of the year of the Hegira and the New Year’s Day of the Gregorian Calendar,” reads the statement from the Royal Cabinet.
The Sovereign gave, in this context, « His High Guidelines to the Head of Government to take the necessary steps to implement this High Royal Decision ».
« This Royal initiative confirms the High solicitude of which His Majesty the King, may God preserve Him, continues to surround the Amazigh as an essential component of the authentic Moroccan identity rich by the plurality of its tributaries and common heritage in all Moroccans without exception,” the statement continued.
It also fits, concludes the text, “within the framework of the constitutional consecration of Amazigh as the official language of the country, alongside the Arabic language”.
