The NGOs Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch said in a statement on Wednesday May 31 that twelve people were killed by the police in Kenya during opposition demonstrations organized last March.

These anti-government demonstrations were carried out precisely on March 20, 27 and 30, at the call of opposition leader Raila Odinga, to protest, among other things, against the high cost of living.

Among the victims are two children who died in Nairobi of complications from tear gas, according to the two organisations.

They also claim that while « some of the victims were involved in the gatherings, most, according to the witnesses interviewed, were bystanders or people in their homes or businesses ». The case of Elijah Okumu, aged 26, killed by the police, “as he was closing his shop in the Dandora district of Nairobi”.

Thirty cases of bullet wounds would be listed, according to NGOs which also denounced the « impunity » enjoyed by the police.

It is not a first for the Kenyan police to be accused of extrajudicial executions, by both local and international human rights organizations.
