The city of Touba, seat of the Muslim brotherhood of the Mourides in Senegal, will no longer host political activities, according to what was decided last weekend by the Caliph General of the Mourides, Serigne Mountakha Mbacké.

To enforce his decision, he ordered the Baye Falls to relocate all the polling stations located within the perimeter of the religious city, and this a few months before the next presidential election in 2024. Which is to say, from the outset, that the voters of the city should move to fulfill their civic right.

The Caliph General of the Mourides took this measure in the wake of the unrest that recently marred the holy city, after the condemnation, on June 1, of the opponent Ousmane Sonko to two years in prison for corruption of youth.

On June 5, President Macky Sall went to the city of Touba to meet the Caliph and discuss the political crisis the country is going through. Nothing had filtered from their conversation.

Some observers fear the unfortunate consequences of Serigne Mountakha Mbacké’s decision and call for discussion with the religious guide.
