The commander of the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which is at war with Sudan’s regular army, has announced a « unilateral » 48-hour ceasefire, starting this Tuesday, June 27, due to the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha.
« We declare a unilateral ceasefire, except in self-defense, on the eve of Eid and on the day of Eid al-Adha, » Mohammad Hamdan Dagalo said in a published audio recording. the day before on Facebook.
The paramilitaries of the RSF and the Sudanese National Army have been clashing since April 15, with many dead (more than 1,000 civilians killed and thousands more injured) and displaced (more than 2.2 million people according to the International Organization for Migration).
The announced ceasefires are not always respected to the letter by the two parties who accuse each other. UN agencies are increasingly denouncing humanitarian disasters.
Hamdan Dagalo, acknowledged the « difficult humanitarian conditions » caused by the conflict and hopes that Eid al-Adha will provide an opportunity for Sudanese to reconcile. « We hope to come out of the war more united and stronger, » he said.
Last week, the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Hissein Brahim Taha, appealed to all parties, on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, to work towards achieving a complete cessation of hostilities.
He also called on all regional and international powers concerned by the Sudanese crisis not to give up in the effort to obtain an immediate ceasefire, for a global peace.
