The Beninese government decided, Wednesday during a Council of Ministers, to set up a center of excellence in otolaryngology (ENT), taking into account the fact that cases of ENT pathology are among the main causes medical evacuations abroad.

The construction and equipment of a reference center intended for their care, with the aim of reducing the costs linked to these evacuations while improving the populations’ access to specific care, constitutes a response provided by the government through the construction of the Calavi International Hospital Center, underlines the press release published after the meeting.

And to continue, with a view to the efficient operation of this reference center, it is essential to have human resources with the skills required to provide quality ENT care in an appropriate environment.

The need to develop this specific skills center was highlighted, by raising the level of the existing technical platform through recent generation imaging equipment which has enabled considerable progress in recent years and has therefore become essential; all while ensuring, through skills transfer, an upgrading of professionals in the field.

Furthermore, the Council also declared itself in favor of strengthening training and research in conventional cardiology in Benin. Concerning this discipline, the government deplored the absence of tenured teachers which hampers the training and supervision of students in specialization at the cardiology training and research unit of the Hubert Koutoukou MAGA National University Hospital Center in Cotonou.

There is therefore a pressing need for teachers of this rank in order to maintain this training center. The implementation of an inter-university partnership to ensure the continuity of this training proves to be a relevant option, maintains the press release.

To do this, the text concludes, the Catholic University of Louvain and the University Hospital Center of Namur, due to their great expertise in these respective fields, were identified and the Council authorized the formalization of partnerships for these purposes.
