On Thursday June 6, the United Nations General Assembly elected five new members to the Security Council for 2025-2026, namely Pakistan, Greece, Denmark, Panama and Somalia.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud welcomed the election, which he attributed to his country’s diplomatic efforts.
« The diplomatic success we have achieved today reflects global recognition of Somalia’s path to recovery and reconstruction », he said, among other things.
By taking its seat on the Security Council, Somalia will make its share of contributions to world security, the Somali leader also hinted, thanking Security Council members, regional allies and continental partners for supporting his country’s candidacy.
