A court in Algiers sentenced, Monday, February 14, to 20 years in prison and a fine of 2 million dinars (12,500 euros), the former Minister of Energy, Chakib Khelil, who was prosecuted for corruption, abuse of office and conclusion of public contracts in violation of laws and regulations.
Khelil, who had fled his country since 2019, did not attend the trial opened on January 31, after several postponements. The Sidi M’hamed court therefore tried him in absentia. Also, the international arrest warrant issued against him in September 2019 has been maintained.
The former Minister of Energy had exercised between 1999 and 2010 under the reign of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Several personalities close to this former head of state have been in the crosshairs of justice since he left power.
