Ukrainian President Zelensky wishes to address the African Union
The Senegalese Head of State, Macky Sall, who is also the current President of the African Union (AU), announced on Monday 12 April the wish of the Ukrainian leader, Volodymyr Zelensky, to address the AU, in a context where African states are divided on their assessment of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
On his Twitter account, the Senegalese number one thanked “President Zelensky for his call today”. And to continue, “we discussed the impact of the war in Ukraine on the world economy and the need to favor dialogue for a negotiated outcome to the conflict”. In addition, Macky Sall says he noted Zelensky’s « request » « to make a communication to the AU ».
As a reminder, on April 7, 24 African countries abstained from voting on a UN resolution suspending Russia from the United Nations Human Rights Council. The resolution was adopted by 93 votes for, 24 votes against and 58 abstentions.
Senegal is also among the countries that have chosen to abstain, as during the vote on March 2 in favor of a resolution demanding « that Russia immediately stop using force against Ukraine ».
However, according to the Senegalese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dakar is campaigning for de-escalation, the immediate cessation of hostilities and the continuation of negotiations, in order to reach a peaceful and lasting solution to the crisis.
