Niger’s President, Mohamed Bazoum, once again reached out, this Friday, June 3, to the jihadists who want to give up their way of life « versed in cruel terrorism ».
Speaking during a trip to the south-west of the country, a region plagued by regular attacks, the head of state assured that it is not too late for those who want to repent.
“I have always said that our door is open. Let them renounce this life which leads them nowhere, which has no meaning, which rhymes with absolutely nothing,” he declared.
Bazoum promises that the repentants will not be abandoned to their own fate, but will benefit from a reintegration program. « If they renounce terrorism, if they renounce violence (…) they will be reintegrated into society, they will be reintegrated economically too ». He hopes his message will be heard, as some have already done.
At the beginning of this week, about forty former members of the terrorist group Boko Haram, completed a program of de-radicalization and professional training, in the Training Center of Goudoumaria (south-east). This is the third wave of repentants from this terrorist group.
According to local authorities, religious training was also provided on « the practice of moderate Islam » and the repentants would have taken an oath on the Koran, a sign that they will not return to the abandoned path.
After the training, everyone is encouraged to set up their workshop, according to the skills received (in mechanics, plumbing, carpentry, sewing, etc.).
