The Israeli government spoke out again, this Tuesday, June 21, for the Moroccanness of the Sahara, this time by the voice of the Israeli Minister of the Interior, Ayelet Shaked.
« Israel affirms its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara », indicated Shaked, during a press conference, organized after his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans residing there. abroad, Nasser Bourita.
She said her talks with Bourita also touched on « the close bilateral relations and the joint projects that the two countries intend to undertake ».
Earlier, Shaked held a working meeting with his Moroccan counterpart, Abdelouafi Laftit. At the end of the meeting, she declared to the press that « the renewal of Morocco-Israel relations is likely to open up prospects for joint actions ».
About three months ago, the Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yaïr Lapid, also assured that his country supported the Moroccan plan for the autonomy of the Sahara, during a meeting with his Moroccan counterpart, on the sidelines of the Negev summit, organized on March 27 and 28 in Israel.
While condemning the « attempts to weaken the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Morocco », Lapid had also hinted that « the declaration published by Spain in favor of the Moroccan initiative for autonomy received all Israel’s support ».
The Kingdom of Morocco and the Jewish state normalized their diplomatic relations in December 2020 as part of the Abraham Accords, a process that endorses this normalization of relations between Israel and certain Arab countries, supported by Washington. In return, the former Trump administration recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.
