The former president of Burkina Faso, Blaise Compaoré, will soon travel to his country where he should be received by the president of the transition, Lieutenant-Colonel Paul Henri Sandaogo Damiba, the head of the military junta in power.

This move was announced by sources close to both parties. It would be part of the national reconciliation process that Damiba would like to initiate. The latter has already received two other former heads of state of the country, namely Jean Baptiste Ouédraogo and Roch Marc Christian Kaboré.

Compaoré had found refuge in exile in Côte d’Ivoire since the fall of his regime in 2014, provoked by a popular insurrection. Last April, the Ouagadougou military court sentenced him in absentia to life imprisonment for his role in the assassination of his predecessor Thomas Sankara.

While an arrest warrant has been issued against him, he should, in accordance with the law, be arrested by the police as soon as he arrives on Burkinabe soil. But things are likely to turn out differently!
