The M23 rebellion which clashes with the army of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in the east of the country, indicated Thursday that the ceasefire announced the day before in Luanda, at the end of an Angola-DRC-Rwanda tripartite mini-summit does not commit it.
The summit which brought together Congolese leaders Félix Tshisekedi and Rwandan Paul Kagame, around the Angolan Joan Lorenzo, resulted in the conclusion of a de-escalation process between the DRC and Rwanda, via a so-called Luanda roadmap.
This roadmap provides, according to the Congolese presidency, for the immediate cessation of hostilities and the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of the M23 from its positions in the DRC.
Recall that the DRC accuses Rwanda of supporting the M23; reason why Kigali is associated with the search for solutions for the laying down of arms by this armed group.
But the targeted rebels do not hear it that way. “This roadmap does not commit the M23. We are Congolese, we have nothing to do with Rwanda. We are asked to leave here, but to go where? It’s impossible, » movement spokesman Willy Ngoma told AFP.
As if to confirm their opposition, the rebels, who already have at least one town under their control, again engaged in fighting with the army on Thursday. The Angolan president who hastened to announce “positive results” from the mini-summit still has his work cut out for him.
