The property of the wealthy Beninese businessman and opponent, Sébastien Ajavon, already seized by the competent Beninese authorities at the beginning of this month, will be auctioned by the State on August 9 in Cotonou, according to a press release from the Treasury. Beninese published on Tuesday July 19.
These are 140 luxury pieces of furniture, works of art and household appliances, as well as a Rolls Royce brand car.
The former presidential candidate of 2016 has already been sentenced twice by the Beninese courts. He was arrested in October 2016, following the discovery of around 18 kg of pure cocaine (estimated at 14 million euros) in a container intended for one of his companies. But for lack of evidence, he was released a few months later, before being sentenced in absentia to 20 years in prison, by a special court in 2018.
He was sentenced again in March 2021, receiving a second sentence of five years in prison for “forgery, use of forgery and fraud”.
This former close friend of President Patrice Talon lives in exile in France. Relations between the two men quickly deteriorated after Talon came to power.
