The Liberian head of state has decided to suspend with « immediate effect », this Tuesday, August 16, his chief of staff, Nathaniel McGill, and two other senior officials of the country cited in a United States report on corruption.
Washington sanctioned, on Monday, these three men for “having undermined the democratic institutions in Liberia for personal interests”. US authorities mainly froze their assets.
Reacting to this American report, the Liberian head of state not only put the accused on the sidelines, but also ordered an investigation. All three were replaced by their respective deputies.
The other two suspended executives are Attorney General Sayma Syrenius Cephus and National Ports Authority CEO Bill Twehway.
Since coming to power in 2017, George Weah has made the fight against corruption his priority. The American ambassador, Michael McCarthy, reminded him of this electoral promise, encouraging him to « make good decisions » against the officials involved.
The Liberian opposition welcomed the suspension of the three senior officials. In 2021, his country was ranked 136th out of 180 countries, in the corruption perception index established by the NGO Transparency International.
