King Mohammed VI spoke on Saturday, August 20, on the occasion of the feast of the Revolution of the King and the people, on the Moroccan Sahara issue, urging Morocco’s partner countries to « clarify » their position on the issue. and to support it “unequivocally”.
He first warned that “the Sahara issue is the prism through which Morocco considers its international environment. It is also clearly and simply the yardstick that measures the sincerity of the friendships and the effectiveness of the partnerships that he establishes.
He then addressed “certain countries which are among the partners, traditional or new” of Morocco “whose positions on the Sahara issue are ambiguous”. « We expect them to clarify and review the substance of their positioning, in a way that is unequivocal, » said the Moroccan sovereign.
King Mohammed VI welcomed the latest developments relating to this question of the Sahara which has registered a positive evolution. In recent years, « we have made great breakthroughs at the regional and international levels, all of which have been favorable to the just and legitimate position of the Kingdom on the Moroccanness of the Sahara », underlined the King.
And to specify, « many influential countries, respectful of Morocco’s full sovereignty over its territories, have expressed their receptivity and support for the Autonomy Initiative, considered as the only possible way for the settlement of this artificial regional conflict. « .
The Moroccan sovereign hailed the initiatives of certain countries which have already aligned themselves with Morocco’s position. The case of the United States which recognized the « Moroccanness » of the Sahara in December 2020 and under the leadership of former President Donald Trump. “Notwithstanding the change in administration or the changing circumstances,” the U.S. position “has remained consistent,” he noted.
Among the other countries mentioned by Mohammed VI is Spain, which has chosen to now consider the Moroccan initiative for autonomy in the Sahara as the best solution to resolve the conflict in this region in southern Morocco. For the King, « this constructive posture marked a new stage in the Hispano-Moroccan partnership that no regional contingency, no internal political development can now affect ».
The Moroccan Sovereign, among other things, also welcomed the support of the countries, around thirty, which « have opened consulates in the Southern Provinces, thus marking their clear and clear support for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom and Moroccanness. of the Sahara ».
He also called on Moroccans living abroad to remain attached to their country of origin.
