Residents of the city of Beni, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), attacked on Tuesday a convoy of the UN Mission in the DRC (Monusco) which was returning from a patrol, according to a press release from the mission which once again deplored these actions against the Blue Helmets.
The convoy was attacked by demonstrators throwing stones, underlines the press release which specifies that “warning shots made it possible to clear a path”.
Monusco recalled that « attacks against blue helmets have a negative impact on the multifaceted support that they provide to the Congolese defense and security forces ». “To weaken Monusco is to strengthen the negative forces that it is fighting with its Congolese partners,” the statement said.
The mission regretted the death of one person in the clashes with the demonstrators. “Unfortunately, one person lost his life. A joint investigation with the Congolese authorities will determine the circumstances of this regrettable death,” she said.
Nationals of several towns in the east of the DRC have called in recent months for the permanent departure of Monusco which, according to them, has been unable to respond to its mission to protect civilians and destroy groups. armed, despite many years in the DRC.
But the UN mission maintains, for its part, that its work is not without convincing results, alongside the national army. In this context, she reiterated “her determination to continue her mandate to support the National Defense and Security Forces for the protection of civilians in the DRC”.
