UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Saturday urged donors to invest in a new mechanism to fund education in developing countries that urgently need support in this sector, according to a statement posted on the UN news site.

Guterres spoke to the press at the Education Transformation Summit in New York. He regretted the reduction in the education budget in these countries, since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, when education is crucial for peaceful, prosperous and stable societies.

“Reducing investment virtually guarantees more serious crises later. We must inject more, not less, money into education systems,” he said.

The Education Transformation Summit, held on the margins of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly, is organized in response to a global education crisis. According to the UN, while the impact of the crisis is often slow and invisible, it is no less devastating for the future of children and young people around the world.

This summit kicked off on September 16 with a day of mobilization, led and organized by young people, which allowed to convey the collective recommendations of young people on the transformation of education to decision-makers and political leaders, through the Summit Youth Declaration.

September 17 was the Day of Solutions aimed at mobilizing the support needed to launch or strengthen initiatives related to the thematic courses of action of the Summit.

This Monday, September 19, is Leaders’ Meeting Day dedicated to the presentation of national declarations of commitment by Heads of State and Government, in the form of Leaders’ Roundtables.
