General Mahamat Idriss Déby was officially invested as « President of the Transition, President of the Republic, Head of State », this Monday, October 10, in accordance with the decisions taken at the end of the Inclusive National Dialogue which took place from August 28 to October 8 in N’Djamena, which extended the transition by two years.
The investiture ceremony recorded the presence of an African head of state, notably the Nigerian Muhammadu Buhari, alongside many Chadian personalities and distinguished guests. The President of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki, declined the invitation addressed to him, knowing that on September 19, the Pan-African organization had demanded that the junta not extend the 18 months of transition originally planned.
In his speech, the invested president promised, among other things, the return to constitutional order within the next 24 months. He spoke of « a new phase of the transition » which will apply to « achieve the deadlines prescribed for the return to constitutional order ».
Mahamat also spoke of the establishment of a government of national unity within « a few days ». This future government « will work body and soul so that the will of the Chadian people does not suffer from any sprain », he said.
As a reminder, the National Dialogue was boycotted by part of the opposition, civil society and rebel groups. But Mahamat said he was satisfied with these foundations which, according to him, made it possible to « get out of the horror scenario ».
Among the other resolutions coming out of the Dialogue is the possibility for this president to embark on the race for the supreme magistracy during the elections to close the transition; another decision that is at odds with the African Union.
General Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno seized power in April 2021, after the death of his father, the late President Idriss Déby. The current situation, after the Dialogue, is like a second phase of the transition.
