« The membership of the African Union will be examined at the G20 Summit of 2023 in India », announced, this Thursday November 16 on Twitter, the president in office of the African Union (AU), Macky Sall, after having thanked « the members of the G20 who supported the candidacy of the African Union to the Group, during the summit in Bali in Indonesia ».
Macky Sall, also Head of State of Senegal, took part, as a guest, in the G20 summit in Bali which was held from November 15 to 16. On the first day of the summit, he pleaded for permanent member status for Africa in this organization, which includes the 19 most industrialized countries in the world and the EU.
“I would like to emphasize that in this renewal of multilateralism to which we committed in Bali, Africa remains an essential partner on the international scene. It is the 8th economic power by its GDP, owns more than 60% of arable land with an estimated population of nearly 2.5 billion by 2050,” he said.
And to continue, « Africa can therefore nurture a just ambition to be integrated as a permanent member of the G20 Forum and I would like to invite my peers to do so ».
So far, South Africa is the only permanent member of the G20 from the African continent. Basically, Africa is seeking greater representation in international forums, including the UN Security Council and the G20.
The 17th G20 Heads of State and Government Summit to be held in India will be themed “Rising Together, Rising Stronger”. The G20 represents approximately 80% of global GDP, 60% of the world’s population and 75% of international trade.
