The M23 rebellion, active in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and which has some localities in the region under its control, announced in a press release its decision to withdraw this Friday from Kibumba. , about twenty kilometers from the city of Goma, capital of the province of North Kivu.
“Despite the attacks on our positions (…) by the government coalition, the M23 supports regional efforts and agrees to hand over its positions in Kibumba to the responsibility of the regional force of East African states”, indicates the rebel movement.
It inscribes “this gesture of goodwill made in the name of peace” among “the recommendations resulting from the Mini-Summit of Heads of State held in Luanda, Angola on November 23, 2022. We hope that the Government of Kinshasa will seize this opportunity. with two hands and will also work to bring peace to our country”.
Kibumba’s withdrawal follows, according to its terms, the conclusions of the meetings held in the same locality on December 12 and 22, between the movement and the regional force and the Ad hoc Verification Mechanism.
