
The Senegalese presidency has decreed a three-day national mourning, starting this Monday, in tribute to the victims of the road accident which left 54 dead and dozens injured on the night of Saturday January 7 to Sunday January 8 in Gniby, a locality located in the Kaffrine region.
« Following today’s serious accident in Gniby which caused 40 deaths, I have decided on a national mourning of 3 days from January 9 », indicated President Macky Sall on social networks, also informing that a interministerial council was to be held on the same date « for the taking of firm measures on road safety and public passenger transport ».
The Head of State said he was « deeply saddened » by this tragic road accident and sent his « heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims » and wished « a speedy recovery to the injured ».
The accident, a collision between two public transport buses, would be the deadliest in recent years in Senegal. “According to the first elements of the investigation (…), a bus assigned to public passenger transport, following the bursting of a tire, left its trajectory before colliding frontally with another bus coming in the opposite direction” , explained the public prosecutor of Kaolack.
