The Gabonese Head of State, Ali Bongo Ondimba, indicated on Monday February 13 that all elective terms in Gabon will be limited to five years, with a view to strengthening democracy in the country.

He made this announcement on the occasion of the opening of the political consultation between the majority and the opposition which will be held until February 24. But the president did not comment on the number of terms. Until now, the mandate of the President of the Republic is seven years and that of the senators six years.

The Gabonese leader had made the promise of this meeting during his traditional message to the nation, at the end of last year. The objective is to tune the violins in such a way as to guarantee transparent elections, as well as peace after the polls.

This year, Gabon will organize the presidential election which will be followed by legislative and local elections.
