The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, announced on Monday the attack on the ambassador of the European Union (EU) in Sudan, the Irishman Aidan O’Hara, in his residence in Khartoum, the capital. .
He denounced this act on Twitter, saying that “this constitutes a flagrant violation of the Vienna Convention. The security of diplomatic premises and personnel is a primary responsibility of the Sudanese authorities and an obligation under international law”.
But the life of the ambassador would not be in danger. The spokesperson for the EU diplomatic service, Nabila Massrali, reassured that Aidan O’Hara, is « Ok ». This was confirmed by Irish Foreign Minister Micheal Martin, who indicated that Mr. O’Hara was « not seriously injured ». The European delegation was not evacuated, Massrali also suggested.
A war broke out on Saturday April 15 in Sudan between the army and the paramilitaries, to the great surprise of the inhabitants. This is a battle between two generals vying for power.
Observers point out that the conflict was latent between General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane, leader of the junta and head of the armed forces, and General Mohamed Hamdane Daglo, number two in the regime, who heads the Rapid Support Forces (RSF , an army of paramilitaries), and has been for weeks.
As of Monday, at least 97 Sudanese have been killed, according to the official doctors’ union, around half of them in Khartoum.
The UN, the G7 and the European Union, among others, have called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the start of dialogue between the conflicting parties.
