The American administration does not hide its concerns about a presence of the Russian group of mercenaries in Sudan, the scene, for ten days, of violent fighting between the army and paramilitaries.
The tone was set on Monday by the head of American diplomacy Antony Blinken, during a joint press conference with his Kenyan counterpart, Alfred Mutua.
« We have very serious concerns about the involvement of the Prigojine group – the Wagner group – in Sudan », he said, stressing that this group brings « its share of additional deaths and destruction », wherever it is present, as in Mali or the Central African Republic.
The Kenyan diplomat expressed concern about the role that certain countries in the Middle East would play. “We have been concerned for some time about the role played by some of our friends in the Middle East, as well as Russia and others, who support one side or the other,” he said.
He urged that « now is not the time to side with one side or the other », while at the same time asking « external forces to leave Sudan alone ».
The fighting, which has killed several hundred people and caused a mass exodus, was sparked by a conflict between General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane, who leads the country, and his former best ex-ally, General Mohamed Hamdane Daglo. The two men had been in control of Sudan since the 2021 putsch.
A three-day ceasefire, concluded between the belligerents under the aegis of the United States, officially entered into force on Tuesday, April 25.
