The Rally of Houphouetists for Democracy and Peace (RHDP), political party in power in Côte d’Ivoire, and the opposition party Ivorian Popular Front (FPI), concluded, Tuesday, May 2, an agreement for national reconciliation , social cohesion and democracy.

The memorandum of understanding was signed, after four months of negotiations, by the executive secretary of the RHDP, Cissé Bacongo, and the president of the FPI, Pascal Affi N’Guessan, during a ceremony organized for this purpose in the capital Abidjan. , in the presence of several senior officials from both parties.

The agreement militates for peace and national reconciliation, as the country has experienced a series of election-related violence. N’Guessan ruled out offering Côte d’Ivoire « the luxury » of experiencing « a new crisis ».

The two politicians defended the agreement reached. The executive secretary of the RHDP spoke of “a conscious act” considered as “an instrument at the service of democracy and reconciliation”. The FPI leader stressed respect for each party’s differences and autonomy.

The RHDP and the FPI have also insisted that this agreement does not involve power sharing. “It is not an instrument of gift sharing, power sharing,” Bacongo said.

« This partnership is obviously not a sharing of jobs and cakes », nor « more of an electoral agreement », said N’Guessan, specifying all the same that the said agreement « does not prohibit meeting where it is seems necessary to us. We mean, for example, town halls or regions where agreements are necessary, in order to block candidates who do not share our objective of national reconciliation, social cohesion and democracy.

Some are waiting to see what this agreement will lead to. In the past, N’Guessan was very critical of the power in place.
