The Beninese Head of State has requested the opening of an investigation to shed light on the terrorist attack that took place in Kérou (north) on the night of Monday May 1 to Tuesday May 2.

« The President of the Republic has urged that a fact-finding mission be carried out on the ground to assess the real circumstances of the occurrence of this tragedy and consequently to draw lessons from it », indicated the government spokesperson, Wilfried Léandre Houngbédji, during a meeting held on Wednesday May 3 at the end of the Council of Ministers.

The attack, which was allegedly perpetrated by armed men, killed around ten villagers, not to mention missing people. According to Houngbédji, « this tragedy was avoidable », insofar as « reports indicate that there was most certainly a failure in the chain of operations for the Defense and Security Forces to deploy in a preventive manner in order to avoid this”.

While the government suspects a failure in the chain of operations of the FDS, the government spokesman suggested that the investigation will « set in motion the sanctions measures against all the leaders of the FDS who have in charge, control of the conduct of operations and who have failed in their duty ».

He also pointed out that the criminals behind this tragedy seek to establish themselves and demoralize the populations by carrying out terrorist operations.
