The Ambassador of the European Union (EU) in Burkina Faso, Wolfram Vetter, has announced that the Union will support the organization of elections in this West African country with an amount of 15 million euros, on the occasion Europe Day celebrated in Ouagadougou on May 9, 2023, at the Ambassador’s residence.
« An envelope of 15 million euros is available to support the electoral process planned by the Transition and agreed with ECOWAS, » he said, adding that « other support options are on the table, including in the security and defense sectors.
More than the elections that should put an end to the ongoing transition in the country, other themes were discussed during the event, including the terrorism facing Burkina.
“Burkina Faso is going through a very serious crisis with several challenges. It is with broken heart that I see the daughters and sons of Burkina Faso falling in the terrorist attacks, suffering the consequences of the insecurity and the humanitarian challenge in a large part of the country », said Wolfram Vetter, while presenting his “deep condolences (…) to the families and loved ones of the defense and security forces, volunteers for the defense of the homeland and other civilian victims”.
The Ambassador reiterated the will of the Union and of the whole of Team Europe, to remain “alongside the people of Burkina Faso to help them overcome the security and humanitarian crisis and the socio-economic challenges”.
“It is in all of our interests that the country regain its stability and once again become the haven of peace that it was, with green and sustainable growth for the benefit of all. And for that, our commitment by your side is, and will remain, unfailing,” he insisted.
The Burkinabè authorities welcomed their country’s cooperation with the EU, which touches on several areas. The celebration of Europe Day recorded, among others, the presence of members of the government, diplomatic representatives of the EU.
