The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in the Central African Republic (CAR), Mohamed Ag Ayoya, alerted, Monday, June 5 in Geneva, to the humanitarian situation in this Central African country, which remains critical, with more than half of the population (i.e. 3.4 million people) in need of assistance and protection.
Of this number, 2.4 million « have such serious and complex needs that their survival and their dignity are in danger », specified this person in charge of the humanitarian aid of the United Nations in the country.
He drew attention to the fact that the conflict in neighboring Sudan has further exacerbated the needs, to the point of modifying a humanitarian plan of 465 million dollars to include support for some 25,000 Sudanese and Central African nationals fleeing the fighting, as well as to the local communities that host them.
“Our priority remains to help the most vulnerable groups in Central African society (…) In addition, we will continue to support those who suffer from the consequences of the conflict in Sudan, whether they are displaced people or communities of welcome,” he said.
Internal or cross-border displacements, following repeated military clashes between various armed groups; flooding and underdevelopment are among the causes that have made many families increasingly vulnerable.
The effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, together with the fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and now the conflict in neighboring Sudan, are contributing to the worsening situation.
The UN Humanitarian Coordinator also underlined the difficulties encountered in the delivery of humanitarian aid in the CAR, particularly during the rainy season during which large parts of the country are inaccessible by road, requiring air transport.
Regarding the security situation of humanitarian workers, « since 2022, approximately every two days, an aid worker is the victim of violence or a security incident », according to Ag Ayoya. But, despite all these challenges, humanitarian partners continue to find ways to support vulnerable communities, he said.
