The Gabonese Elections Center (CGE), the body responsible for organizing the elections, proposed, on Sunday after its general assembly in Libreville, a draft timetable which provides for the holding, on August 26, of the presidential, legislative and local elections.

« The Gabonese Elections Center is today presenting a draft calendar for the elections to be held on August 26, in a single round, combining the presidential elections, the deputies of the National Assembly and the members of the departmental and municipal councils », said announced its president, Michel Stéphane Bonda.

This programming, on the same date of these elections, is a first in the country. It remains for it to be ratified or modified by the government, by decree taken in the Council of Ministers.

Applications close on July 11. The campaign will begin on August 11 for the presidential election and on August 16 for the legislative and local elections. The campaign closing date for all these elections is August 25 at midnight.

Incumbent President Ali Bongo, 64, has not yet clearly announced his decision to run for a third term, but his statements leave no doubt about it. The ruling party, the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), which considers him its « natural candidate », assures that the Constitution allows Bongo to stand as a candidate for his own succession.

While Gabon has been ruled for fifty years by the Bongo family, the opposition continues to denounce a « dynastic power ».
