Burkina denounced, Monday, August 8, the double taxation tax treaty, signed on August 11, 1965 with France and entered into force on February 15, 1967, for lack of adaptation to changes in tax systems at internal, community and international levels. , according to information relayed by the local press.
The Burkinabè diplomacy would have sent a correspondence to the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs to explain that this denunciation stemmed from the refusal of Paris to renegotiate the said convention.
The French Embassy in Ouagadougou had been seized in 2020 then relaunched in 2021, without follow-up, deplores the Burkinabè Ministry of Foreign Affairs which finally considered, in the face of French silence, that the only solution is to « end the convention » .
Under this agreement, French companies and citizens paid taxes to France on the income they earned in Burkina Faso and were exempt from certain taxes on Burkinabe territory.
Ouagadougou believes it has suffered significant revenue losses for many years and hopes to reverse the situation, with the termination of the agreement taking effect within three months.
It should be noted that on August 6, France suspended development aid and budget support for Burkina Faso. Relations between the two countries have been strained since the military came to power.
