Senegal opened its consulate general in Dakhla on Monday (April 5th), bringing to 11 the number of countries with diplomatic representation in this city located southwest of the Moroccan Sahara.
The inaugural ceremony of the consulate was co-chaired by the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans living abroad, Nasser Bourita and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad, Aïssata Tall Sall .
To date, the countries that have opened consulates in Dakhla are Burkina Faso, Djibouti, United States, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Haiti, Liberia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Senegal thus becomes the 11th African country to open a diplomatic representation in Dakhla.
Other countries have opened their diplomatic representations in Laayoune, the other major province of the Moroccan Sahara. These are the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Bahrain, Eswatini, Zambia, Côte d’Ivoire, Central African Republic, Sao Tome and Principe, Gabon, Burundi and the Comoros.
In all, the number of consulates open in the Moroccan Sahara reached 22 on April 5. Some observers believe that, following the United States, European countries will soon recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.
