The former president of Burkina Faso, Blaise Compaoré, who was already the subject of an international arrest warrant for his alleged involvement in the death of the former head of state Thomas Sankara, has just been put, this Tuesday, April 13, indicted by a military court in Ouagadougou, for attack on state security, complicity in murder and concealment of corpses.
He should appear in court to answer for the facts of which he is accused. This breakthrough in the Sankara murder case was welcomed by the lawyer for the civil party.
Gilbert Diendéré, former right-hand man of Compaoré, Hyacinthe Kafando, former bodyguard of Compaoré and alleged head of the commando that carried out the assassination of Sankara, were also indicted, along with 12 other people.
Former President Thomas Sankara, considered the “father of the revolution”, was killed in October 1987 in a coup that brought Compaoré to power.
After 27 years of reign, Blaise Compaoré had been ousted from power by the street, following his attempt to modify the Constitution to seek a new mandate. This initiative had precipitated the fall of his regime, which had already been denounced.
Questions arise as to his possible extradition to Burkina Faso for his trial, given that he had acquired Ivorian nationality, and that the Coast can refuse his extradition.
