Former Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who is under investigation for corruption, hosted his first press conference on Thursday, during which he denounced his opponents seeking to defame him.
He accused them of carrying out against him “a vast campaign of denigration and legal proceedings contrary to the Constitution”.
“All material and human means were used to target me arbitrarily. The only reason for that is to stop myself from playing politics, “said the former leader who led his country from 2008 to 2019.
Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz has promised not to be crushed. “I will remain standing, I will assume my responsibilities and I am ready to go to prison for that”, he assured, while promising that “when the time comes, before the judge, I will defend myself and make revelations” .
Note that, until then, the former president has always refused to answer questions from investigators, pointing out that he is covered by immunity as the former head of state.
He has also ruled out any possibility of exiling himself from his country. “They must not think that they can make me bow (…) I will not leave, neither in Senegal, nor in Mali, neither in Morocco, nor in Algeria, nor in any other country and neither in France, ”he continued.
The former head of state recently joined a small opposition party, the National Ribat. He had been ousted from the Union for the Republic (UPR) which he had founded in 2009.
